Agricultural Exporter: Network and Freight Redesign

Joint project collaborating with multiple processing organisations

Regional exporters

Devising cost and operational efficiencies

In a bid to achieve cost and operational efficiencies, Prological undertook a full network and freight review and redesign for one of Australia’s longest running and highly trusted cotton marketers and exporters.

The battery limits of the review were Cotton Gins to Port via warehousing infrastructure. Cotton seed as well as baled cotton was within the scope of review.

The regional geography spanned from northern NSW, west to Dirranbandi and northwest to Emerald.

The objective of the assignment was to design and implement more efficient systems and processes within the battery limits of project.

Regional modelling

This process afforded the Prological consulting team extensive research into both warehousing and transport capability throughout the geography within scope.

Toowoomba continued to come up as a preferred centre for operations, however the infrastructure could not support requirements, despite the evidenced geographic advantage.

In a separate assignment, and due to our extensive experience throughout the region, a second organisation approached our team to work in collaboration.

We were invited to conduct a joint project looking at operational synergies between the two organisations within their ‘shared’ geographies.

Again, Toowoomba centric options looked strong ‘at the desktop’ but critical elements were not available within the region at the time and therefore Toowoomba was passed over.

Growth in new opportunities available

If this project was to be undertaken within the context of Toowoomba today, including Wellcamp, Wagner Corp, InterlinkSQ and Inland Rail, there is the probability of very different outcomes to those options that were available to these organisations more than a decade ago.
